Gichin Funakoshi was born in Shuri, Okinawa in 1868. Master Funakoshi was a student of one of Okinawa’s greatest experts of Karate-do, Master Yasutsune Azato as well as being a student to the much respected Master Itosu. Master Funakoshi learned from these two great masters the fundamentals of Karate and developed a diffused form of Karate-do which is known as Shoto-Kan.
Funakoshi became a school teacher but still continued his training under a number of instructors. While Funakoshi was still a young man the Japanese Government sought to bring a stronger sense of unity to Japan and it's islands. Military matters were actively promoted and this naturally included the martial arts. In 1917 Funakoshi demonstrated Karate in public for the first time. Such demonstrations aroused the interest of the crown prince Hirohito and government bodies.
As Karate began to infuse into more areas of Japanese society Funakoshi became much sought after. He made the decision to relocate to the Japanese mainland in order to teach and opened the first Karate training hall in 1939. The hall was named after Funakoshi's pen name of 'Shoto' with the style of Karate Funakoshi taught becoming known as Shotokan. In 1948 the Japan Karate Association was established which helped spread Karate throughout the world.
Master Funakoshi died in 1957 at the age of 89 years old.
